Tang Contemporary Art is pleased to introduce Crab, a significant solo exhibition by renowned Chinese artist Yue Minjun. Spanning the artist’s influential thirty-year career, the exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of his major series when unveiling new works that further expand his distinctive visual language.
Employing a non-linear curatorial approach that mirrors the multidirectional, lateral movement of a crab, the exhibition moves beyond Yue's celebrated 'laughing man' imagery to reveal the depth and breadth of his visual practice. Crab is not only the title of the exhibition, but also an apt reflection of the artist's working method. As viewers navigate between different series, they encounter not a simple repetition of the smiling face, but rather a trajectory of thought that breaks free from a singular perspective, branching, shifting sideways, and offering glimpses into the complex visage of human nature and the era, suspended between absurdity and reality.
